Since early Wednesday morning, April 30, hundreds of brave firefighters have battled side by side with Israel’s Fire and Rescue Services, police, and the IDF to contain the largest wildfire in Israel’s history.

After more than 30 hours of relentless effort, the flames were finally brought under control. However, the damage is overwhelming. What began as isolated blazes has become a national environmental disaster. The fires are believed to have burned through 26,000 dunams of woodlands. Nearly two-thirds of the burned areas in both fires were completely consumed in the flames and will require long-term ecological restoration.
In just one day, over 21 square kilometres of forests near Jerusalem were destroyed, trees that took generations to grow, now reduced to ash. Hills once alive with green are now scorched and barren.
