Nick Gerstel is a born leader with an extraordinary ability to inspire others, lead with empathy, and live out Jewish values through action.
As Programs Manager at Stand Up, Nick leads initiatives that not only inspire the next generation of changemakers, but bring Jewish and First Nations communities into deep, long-term partnership. For the last two years, he has headed the flagship Derech Eretz program, connecting Jewish young adults with the communities of Toomelah and Boggabilla. Under his guidance, the program has strengthened trust, expanded participation, and empowered participants to become advocates for reconciliation in their own circles.
Nick creates spaces where First Nations and Jewish communities can have their voices heard with kavod (respect) and genuine curiosity – embodying the Jewish imperative to pursue justice (tzedek) and repair the world (tikkun olam). This is no small feat in today’s polarising world.
What sets Nick apart is the way his Jewish values infuse his work. He leads with compassion, humility, and a belief in the dignity of every person. His facilitation style invites people into even the most challenging conversations, helping them move from awareness to action. Participants consistently describe leaving his programs not only more informed, but more committed to justice and compassion.
Nick’s leadership is proof that allyship is a daily practice. By weaving Jewish ethics into every interaction, he is inspiring a new generation to live their values and be changemakers themselves.
