Mushkie Rubin is nominated for her extraordinary and transformative contributions to the Jewish community in North Queensland, based in Cairns. As a Rebbetzin, community leader, educator, and mother, Mushkie wears many hats—each one with immeasurable dedication, warmth, and selflessness.
Mushkie is the driving force behind virtually every aspect of Jewish life in North Queensland. On both macro and micro levels, she plays an integral role in sustaining and nurturing a thriving Jewish community in a remote area where access to Jewish infrastructure is limited. Together with her husband, she has built a home that serves as a haven for Jewish people of all backgrounds, offering connection, support, and a sense of belonging.
One of Mushkie’s major contributions is the weekly Hebrew School she organizes and teaches. Through it, she provides young Jewish children with access to quality Jewish education, engaging them with traditions, language, and values that are otherwise difficult to access in regional areas. Beyond education, she has created a dynamic space for communal Jewish life. Every Friday night, she hosts Shabbat dinners for an average of 60 people, preparing meals from scratch while providing both spiritual and emotional nourishment to participants.
Mushkie is also deeply committed to women’s education and empowerment. Her weekly “Torah and Tea” class creates a space for women to connect, learn, and grow together, fostering a sense of unity and purpose within the community. On top of these responsibilities, she homeschools her five young children—balancing motherhood with communal leadership in a truly inspiring way.
Her efforts extend to every Jewish holiday, for which she singlehandedly coordinates events that include community meals, children’s programming, and meaningful celebrations that bring Jewish traditions to life in practical and joyful ways for all ages.
In the truest sense, Mushkie Rubin is the heart of the North Queensland Jewish community. Her experiences were shown in the Outback Rabbis documentary, showing through acts big and small, she ensures no Jew feels alone—no matter how far they may be from traditional community centres. Her leadership, love, and tireless work make her a remarkable
