Jono consistently goes above and beyond in his volunteer work, demonstrating a commitment and passion that truly sets him apart as a role model. His involvement with the Youth Cancer Advisory Committee (YCAC) reflects his empathy and desire to make a difference. He has provided invaluable support to young people facing cancer and influenced positive changes in advisory processes, ensuring that their voices are heard in crucial decision-making.
The YCAC is a group of young people aged 15-25 who have or have had a cancer diagnosis. Drawing on their first-hand experience with Youth Cancer Services (YCS), they work together to advocate for better support for young cancer patients with the goal that the next young person’s cancer experience is better. Jono’s involvement with the YCAC spans seven years. Nominated by his colleagues, he served as chairperson for 3.5 years, guiding the committee through a rebuild and completing significant advocacy work. After stepping down as chair, Jono was asked to remain on the committee as the Executive Mentor, a testament to the respect and trust his peers have in his leadership and expertise. In this role, he continues to be an active member, offers guidance and shapes the committee’s direction. On behalf of the YCAC, Jono has attended two national youth cancer consumer conferences, has participated in patient panels and has served as keynote speaker at several other conferences and events. His contributions in these events have amplified the committee’s mission, sharing personal experiences to influence better support systems for young cancer patients. Through these speaking engagements and advocacy efforts, Jono has consistently demonstrated his deep commitment to improving the cancer experience for young people. From 2016 to 2018, Jono volunteered for three years within Bnei Akiva, playing a vital role in fostering community and leadership among young people. As a Madrich, he organised and ran weekly programs for both primary and high school students, providing meaningful experiences that shaped their values and development. Additionally, he planned and ran various community events, even stepping in as the community DJ to create a lively atmosphere. One of his standout achievements during this time was serving as the head of camp for Bnei Perth’s largest-ever winter camp, where his leadership and organisational skills ensured its overwhelming success. Through his tireless efforts and compassionate approach, Jono has exemplified what it means to be a changemaker. His contributions have not only improved the lives of individuals but have also strengthened the fabric of several communities. His commitment to making a difference is both inspiring and transformative, and he truly embodies the spirit of the Changemakers Award. Jono’s recognition would be a fitting tribute to his outstanding contributions and the positive changes he has brought to his community and beyond. |
